The main objective of this course is to provide guidelines for selection of the adequate materials to be used for specific indications in order to maximize treatment predictability.

Kenneth; excellent question. Alloderm (and Alloderm GBR) or other tissue-derived membranes (CopiOs, CopiOs Extend, Pericardium) are considered to be long-lasting absorbable membranes and very adequate for GBR techniques. They work better with mineralized allografts. They have many advantages over non-absorbable membranes (improved handling, less post-op complications). In terms of "barrier effect", they are your closest option to non-absorbable membranes.

Maurice; the future is bright for Biologics. Osteoinduction and pro-angiogenic factors for sure are welcome but they still lack osteoconductivity, so they depend on a good scaffold or tenting device. We still need to find the ideal carrier to prevent the biologic material from being washed out too quickly or the carrier blocking osteoconduction. Once we find the perfect balance, the game will change for sure.

Bone Reconstruction: A New Algorithm for the Implantologist
Bone augmentation is often required to place an adequate number of dental implants in ideal positions for prosthetic support. In addition to biomechanical demands bone augmentation can also provide proper ridge contour for improved esthetic outcomes. Disadvantages of bone augmentation techniques include increase morbidity, surgical time, costs and treatment length. As such a trend has develop towards treatment approaches that avoid bone grafting including shorter and narrower implants, angled implants and/or fewer implants for prosthetic support. This presentation will look at various bone augmentation techniques, methods to minimize the morbidity of bone grafting and guide clinicians on implant rehabilitation with grafting versus non-grafting approaches.

Today's implant arena involves not only the understanding of procedures but also the science behind wound healing. Often new technologies and instrumentation evolves that have a significant impact on what we are able to do clinically. Piezosurgical devices, periotomes, osteotomes, hydraulic sinus devices, neurosurgical drills, and the "PET" (Partial Extraction Therapies) system are just a short list of those that have made surgery more efficient and less traumatic for our patients. Osseodensification is another concept that can be added to this long list. This lecture will speak about new age bone management concepts and how these technologies may be able to assist us. Guided Bone Regeneration Using a Titanium Membrane at Implant Placement: A Case Report and Literature Discussion
Reconstruction of the oral supporting tissues lost by disease or trauma is essential to tooth replacement with dental implant therapy. This treatment requires evidence based augmentative procedures combined with up-to-date and current techniques. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) aims to initialize this process of alveolar ridge reconstruction by utilizing biologically active and supportive materials best coupled to the body’s healing processes. The use of nonresorbable, titanium membranes can achieve GBR by ensuring graft stability and space maintenance so as to ensure optimal neovascularization. Hereafter is a case report of a ridge defect reconstructed at implant placement, with the rationale and current, evidence-based literature discussed.
