Course Overview
The development of peri-implantitis after a well executed surgical procedure is always distressing. If it occurs post-reconstruction, it may compromise the final prosthesis and change the prognosis for the case. A decision to treat the disease process rather than removing the affected implant and revising the case can be a difficult decision. The success rates for treatment of more advanced peri-implant infections still remains relatively low. Without understanding the “Mode of Failure”, and the inability to treat the implant surface definitively, may lead to additional failures and ultimate implant loss. This lecture questions the current understanding why implants become infected, and offers potential solutions to retreatment problems.
Course Objectives
1. Understand the “Mode of Failure” in the development of peri-implantitis.
2. Determine when an implant defect is treatable.
3. Understand the complexity of metallic oxide implant surfaces.
4. Utilize strategies, both pre- and post-implant placement, to reduce the potential for development of peri-implantitis.
